Mosaic Tile Installation Guide
At World of Mosaic, we supply high-quality mosaic tiles designed for kitchens, bathrooms, pools, and outdoor areas. Correct installation is essential to achieve the best appearance, durability, and long-term performance. This guide provides general installation advice for porcelain, marble, and glass mosaic tiles.
Important: We always recommend using a qualified professional tiler, especially for pools, wet rooms, and outdoor installations.
Before You Start
Check the Tiles
- Inspect all mosaic sheets before installation
- Ensure colour, size, and finish match your order
- Install tiles from multiple boxes to avoid shade variation
- Do not install damaged or faulty tiles
Once tiles are installed, claims for appearance-related issues cannot be accepted.
Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is critical.
- Substrates must be clean, dry, level, and structurally sound
- Remove dust, grease, paint, or loose materials
- Repair cracks or uneven areas before tiling
- For wet areas, ensure proper waterproofing is in place
- External surfaces must be weather-resistant and fully cured
Suitable substrates include:
- Cement backer boards
- Rendered walls
- Concrete floors
- Tile backer boards
Adhesive Selection
Use the correct adhesive for your mosaic type and application:
- Porcelain Mosaic: Flexible cement-based adhesive (C2 rated)
- Marble Mosaic: White flexible adhesive to prevent staining
- Glass Mosaic: White, highly flexible adhesive suitable for glass
For pools and outdoor areas, use waterproof and frost-resistant adhesives.
Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
Tile Installation
- Apply adhesive using a small-notched trowel (usually 3–6mm)
- Spread adhesive evenly over a manageable area
- Press mosaic sheets firmly into place
- Use a rubber float to ensure even contact
- Maintain consistent spacing between sheets
- Regularly check alignment and level
Avoid excessive adhesive between tile joints.
Cutting Mosaic Tiles
- Use a wet tile cutter or mosaic tile nippers
- Cut from the back of the sheet where possible
- Take extra care with glass and marble mosaics
- Wear appropriate safety equipment
Grouting
Allow adhesive to fully cure before grouting (usually 24 hours).
- Choose a grout suitable for the tile material and environment
- Use non-sanded grout for glass and polished marble mosaics
- For pools and wet areas, use waterproof or epoxy grout
- Apply grout diagonally across joints
- Clean excess grout with a damp sponge before it dries
Sealing (For Marble Mosaic)
Natural stone mosaics should be sealed:
- Apply a suitable stone sealer before and after grouting
- This helps prevent staining and moisture absorption
- Follow the sealer manufacturer’s guidelines
Porcelain and glass mosaics generally do not require sealing.
Aftercare & Maintenance
- Avoid heavy use for at least 24–48 hours after installation
- Clean tiles using pH-neutral cleaners only
- Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
- Reseal marble mosaics periodically if required
Special Applications
Kitchen Mosaics
- Ensure splashback areas are heat-resistant
- Allow adequate curing before exposure to water or steam
Bathroom & Wet Rooms
- Waterproofing systems are essential
- Use anti-slip options for floors
Pool Mosaics
- Use pool-approved adhesives and grout
- Allow extended curing time before filling the pool
Outdoor Mosaics
- Ensure frost-resistant tiles, adhesives, and grout
- Install only in suitable weather conditions
